Your Bike's Sorted. Your Run's Solid. So Why Does the Swim Still Scare You?

You can grind out a long ride without blinking. You've got a running routine you could do in your sleep. You've watched the Ironman finish-line videos more times than you'd admit, and somewhere along the way you quietly decided: that's going to be me.
And then you remember the swim.
Suddenly the whole thing feels less like a dream and more like a problem. Because here's the truth nobody says out loud at the start line: for most people coming to triathlon, it isn't the bike or the run that lets them down. It's the water.
If that's you, take a breath. You're in exactly the right place, and you're far from alone.
"I can swim... I just can't swim swim"
You can get from one end of the pool to the other. You're not going to drown. But two lengths in, you're gasping, your heart's pounding, and you're clinging to the wall wondering how on earth anyone does this for 1.5km, let alone the 3.8km of a full Ironman.
That gap, between "I can keep myself alive in water" and "I can swim efficiently for distance," is enormous. And it's almost never about fitness. You've proven your fitness on the bike and the run. It's about technique.
Thrashing harder doesn't fix a swim. Better technique does. And technique is teachable, at any age, no matter where you're starting from.
And, mostly, it’s down to breath control.
Why the swim humbles strong athletes
Running and cycling reward effort. Work harder, go faster. Simple.
Water doesn't play by those rules. Fight it, and it fights back, harder. The fitter, stronger athletes are often the ones who struggle most at first, because the instinct to power through is exactly the instinct that sinks you. The water asks for something most endurance athletes aren't used to giving: efficiency over effort, calm over force.
Where to actually start (when you don't know where to start)
Here's the honest order of things:
1. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Open water, race-day nerves, the wash of other swimmers around you, none of it feels natural at first. Confidence in the water is the foundation everything else is built on. Skills follow confidence, not the other way around. (We say this about three-year-olds too. Turns out it's just as true at forty.)
2. Fix the breathing. If your breathing falls apart, everything falls apart. Most "I can't swim far" problems are really "I can't breathe efficiently while swimming" problems in disguise.
3. Find your float and your body position. A sinking, dragging body position is the single biggest energy thief in the pool. Sort this and everything suddenly costs less.
4. Then build the distance. Once the technique holds, endurance comes far quicker than you'd think, because you're no longer wasting half your energy fighting the water.
Notice that "swim further" comes last, not first. Most people do it the other way round and wonder why they plateau.
Why Swim Superb?
We're best known for teaching little ones, and yes, our pools are full of proud poolside parents. But here's something people don't always know: Tom, who co-founded Swim Superb, has years of experience coaching adults.
Tom has an Open Water Swim Coach qualification, and has taught adults for countless years. He is a Stroke Analyst, meaning he can pick out the smallest things that make the biggest difference to your swim. Tom also has experience in the competitive world, having taken part in many triathlons and open water swims himself. In fact, at the end of the Great North Swim back in 2016 is where Jess realised Tom might be the one for her as he stumbled, jelly-legged out of the water and onto the finish line!
Our philosophy that's earned the trust of over 850 families works just as well for a nervous triathlete as it does for a nervous toddler:
Technique first, always. We build proper swimmers, not lengths counted badly.
We meet you exactly where you are. No judgement, no comparing you to the lane next to you. Your journey is your journey.
We're a family-run school. That means real care, real consistency, and a coach who actually remembers you and your goals week to week.
No egos. No making you feel daft for being a strong athlete who happens to find the water hard. Just honest, expert coaching that gets you to that start line feeling ready instead of dreading the gun.
The swim doesn't have to be the thing that holds you back
It can become the part you're quietly proud of. The leg you stopped fearing. The reason you finally stop saying "one day" and start saying "this year."
Your first Ironman, your first triathlon, your first proper open-water swim, it starts with one honest conversation about where you are now and where you want to get to.
