Scared of Water?

You're Not Being Silly. And You're Not Beyond Help.

Let's start with the thing you've maybe never said out loud.

You're an adult. You're capable, competent, you hold it together in a hundred situations that would floor other people. And yet the thought of getting into a swimming pool makes your chest tighten and your stomach drop.

Maybe you've never learned. Maybe something happened when you were small that you've never quite shaken. Maybe you don't even know why, you just know that water and you have never been friends, and the older you get, the more impossible it feels to do anything about it.

Here's what we need you to hear first: this is real, it's common, and it is absolutely not your fault.

Aquaphobia isn't "being a bit nervous"

There's a world of difference between someone who'd rather not get their hair wet and someone whose body floods with genuine fear at the water's edge.

A true fear of water, aquaphobia, isn't a confidence wobble you can be jollied out of. It's a phobia, with real physical and emotional roots. And like any phobia, telling someone to "just get in, you'll be fine" doesn't work. It usually makes things worse.

That's exactly why it needs the right approach, not a standard swimming lesson where you're expected to keep up, and not a well-meaning friend promising they'll "only let go for a second."

So why does pushing through never work?

Because fear isn't logical, and you can't out-muscle it.

When you're afraid in water, your body takes over: muscles tense, breathing goes shallow and fast, and everything you try to do becomes ten times harder. Push someone past that point and you don't build confidence, you reinforce the very fear you're trying to undo.

The fear has to come first. Before strokes. Before lengths. Before anything that looks like a "proper" swimming lesson. You have to feel safe before you can learn, and feeling safe can't be rushed.

This is the same truth we build our whole school on, with our youngest swimmers and our oldest alike: confidence first, skills second. Get the order wrong and nothing sticks.

Introducing Swim Superb's School of Aquaphobia

This is exactly why we created Swim Superb's School of Aquaphobia: a dedicated space for adults and children whose relationship with water is built on fear, not fun.

Overcoming a genuine fear of water isn't guesswork. There's an established, professional method behind it, developed by the Institute of Aquaphobia. It's called the Aquaphobia Learning Programme: a gentle, 12-stage approach designed to support people with a fear of water from both a psychological and a physical point of view.

In plain English? It meets the fear, not just the swimming. It moves at your pace, in small, manageable steps, so you're never tipped past what you can handle. No countdowns you didn't agree to. No surprises. No "just put your face in for me." Just steady, safe, supported progress, on your terms.

Why trust us with something this big

We're a family-run swim school, and we're known for our little ones. But here's what sets our School of Aquaphobia apart, and what genuinely matters when you're frightened of water:

Tom, who co-founded Swim Superb, is a tutor for the Institute of Aquaphobia. That means he doesn't just use the method, he trains other swimming teachers in it. And our team includes teachers qualified to CTA Level 1 and Level 2, Aquaphobia Coaches and Advanced Aquaphobia Coaches who are specifically trained to assess where your fear sits and support you safely through it.

That's not a swim school hoping it can help. That's a school built on the proper training to know it can.

And it's wrapped in the thing we care about most:

  • No judgement. Ever. You will not be made to feel silly, slow, or like a grown-up who "should know this by now."

  • We meet you exactly where you are. Your starting point is your starting point. We work from there.

  • Real, consistent care. Same trusted face week to week, someone who remembers you, your worries, and how far you've already come.

We've earned the trust of over 850 families through care, consistency and a genuine focus on safety. That same care is exactly what a frightened swimmer of any age deserves.

Imagine the other side of this

Standing at the edge of a pool and feeling... calm. Getting in because you want to, not because someone's watching. Maybe, one day, floating, the thing that felt impossible, with a quiet little smile because you actually did it.

People do reach that other side. All the time. Not by being brave enough to force it, but by being supported properly through it.

You don't have to stay frightened of water for the rest of your life. And you don't have to figure out the first step alone.
